Why Is Hungarian Goose Down So Special?

Why Is Hungarian Goose Down So Special?

Our ancestors discovered thousands of years ago that the plumage of waterfowls is a rather unique material, useful for filling bedding and clothes. Among all waterfowl species, the plumage of the goose has the most excellent parameters.

However, many factors influence the properties of the tighter feathers and the almost weightless down that make up the plumage of geese.
The quality of goose down varies between regions and countries.

Hungarian breeders can ensure the production of premium quality goose down thanks to:

  • The favourable continental climate of Hungary
  • Hungarian goose breeds
  • Ensuring free range and grazing
  • Excellent domestic agricultural experts.

The structure of feathers and down are significantly different. Similarly, the difference in their prices can be huge, which comes down to several factors. That is why we advise you to study the most important ones before investing in a new product.
The difference can be easily seen by the eye and felt by the hand.

About goose down

Due to the special internal structure of the down, it takes on a specific shape. Without a spine, it has no stability, and it flies away from the slightest blow. The elementary threads meet in a tiny core, in a barely visible central point. This results in an unruled, soft, fluffy, but somehow still spherical shape. On the surface of these filaments, there are even smaller spikes, invisible to the human eye, which help the threads connect to link to each other in strong cohesion. The elementary threads connected in this way create a million tiny air locks. This wonderful structure  provides exceptionally soft filling. Goose down can be used in sleeping bags, duvets, pillows, winter jackets, or even professional mountaineering clothing due to its extraordinary thermal insulation.

A misconception needs to be dispelled.
Overfilling the down will not make the quilt warmer.
It is not the down itself that provides the warmth, but the air enclosed between its elementary fibres that insulates the heat of our body.
Down with a high filling power has the best thermal insulation ability. In the case of pure goose down, this value can be 800-900 cubic inches.
Down is highly resistant, and can be easily packed or squeezed into smaller spaces. Its colour, such as of the feathering of live animals, can vary from purely white to grey melange, or even turn into a brownish grey shade. It is undoubtedly the most valuable filling for bedding, which is available for everyone. Moreover, it is a biodegradable substance. It does not pollute the environment.
However, we recommend reusing the filling, as after appropriate sterilisation and disinfection, it will be as good as ever.
