FAQ

Why are the prices of down-filled duvets and pillows so different?

Many manufacturers and retailers offer down-filled bedding products.

These products are excellent investments, however, are far from cheap, so it is worth paying attention to all the details included in the product descriptions, as a lot of factors affect the prices.

Duck or goose? Or perhaps mixed filling?

The most valuable filling of these is pure goose down filling.

Where does the goose down come from?

The origin of goose down highly affects the final price of the product.

Every country prefers down of different origins, but it can be stated for certainty, that Hungarian goose down is definitely the most sought after filling material, in case of premium quality bedding products. Thus, its price can also get quite high.

How high is the filling power of goose down?

The filling power of feathers is around 500 cubic inch, while goose down of the highest quality can reach more than 800 cubic inch filling power. It is extremely rare to find a material with higher filling power.

What is the composition of a goose down product?

We can talk about a goose down product if at least 70% of the filling is goose down.

Pure goose down has 100% down in it and nothing else. This is extremely rare though, and is significantly more expensive than products with a down content of 90-95%.

What colour is the goose down?

Fully white goose down is highly valuable, and as such it is the most expensive.

However, grey or melange down provides us with similarly enjoyable bedding.

Are we buying from a manufacturer or a retailer?

The product often goes through many links in the supply chain until it reaches the retailer from the manufacturing factory. This is why the already high price of the product can climb further due to the added costs.

What material is the shell of the duvet or pillow made of?

Goose down can only be filled into a close-textured, down proof textile case, specifically created for this purpose.

The production technology of these materials provides sufficient airing for the filling material inside, while also guaranteeing that every single element of the filling stays inside the case during the whole lifespan of the product.

The best materials are qualified as TC300-400 and thus their prices are accordingly expensive.

This number means that 1x1 inch sized square of the raw material contains this many threads, which make up the fabric in terms of warp and weft.

The most common material to use is plain, but there is growing demand for satin as well.

Often the highest demand is for pure cotton satin, however, this does not necessarily mean better quality. It is usually just an aesthetic preference from the customer side.

It is thus worthwhile to check all the details to find the expected duvet or pillow at the best price value ratio.

Can we expect a more expensive goose-down duvet to have a longer life span?

If we are choosing from the selection of products of the same company, then yes, we can assume that more expensive products are also going to last longer.

However, in case of products of different companies, this is not necessarily true.

This is because the products of specific companies reach the customer in many ways. Various costs can raise the price of the product, while its value does not actually grow.

It is worth to gather information on this, and pick based on the product description.

Can the colour of the down filling affect the quality of the product?

The white and grey melange versions of Hungarian goose down are equally high quality. It does not affect the recreational value of the final product.

If the quality of the down fillers are equal, their filling power also aligns, and we get an identically excellent final product, regardless the colour of the filling.

What is a triple chamber pillow?

The seemingly traditional pillow has a chamber built inside. This is held together on the edges by shared seaming.

The inner core usually has massive filling. This is goose feather, most of the time. The two external chambers, however, are filled with soft goose down of excellent quality. This way, this pillow mixes the two most fundamental expectations: The surface which touches the face provides the skin with a soft, comfortable feeling. Then, the inner core provides long-term stability for the pillows.

Are goose feather and down actually recyclable?

Yes, they are.

The environmentally mindful and responsible customer only buys those products, which are sustainable for the environment.

Unlike synthetically-filled bedding, goose feather and down are recyclable, even multiple times.

After proper disinfection, washing, and cleaning, classification takes place, so the newly healthy feathers and down are again can be filled into both duvets and pillows. The new products carry the exact same qualities as the original products once did.

Is washing down-filled products a myth or reality?

Still, many people are opposed to buying naturally filled bedding products due to the various misunderstandings on cleaning these products at home.

The pure cotton covering of duvets and pillows make it possible, and the luxurious filling material also makes it possible to wash these products at home. This is usually shown on the label instructions.

Both feather and down can be washed, as this is a prerequisite to recycling.

However, the final bedding product is made with a complex technology, which makes the inner filling inaccessible at home. It is in itself not washable.

This does not cause issues during the washing procedure yet, it is washable in a washing machine, on a low setting.

The drying part of the process though requires a lot of care and patience regarding the handling of the filling.

If turned properly, often shaken up, and kept away from any sources of heat, it is possible to get back our favourite duvets and pillows in their original quality.

It is possible to do this in a dryer too, but only in multiple steps, with breaks in between, and on a low temperature. During the process, you should even the filling and smooth it with your hands to shake it up a bit. This requires patience, as the full drying procedure can take up to multiple days.

What lifespan should we plan with in the case of a goose down bedding product?

The lifespan of natural fillings is many times longer than that of synthetic fillings.

We often have negative experiences with synthetic-filled pillows.

They are indeed not expensive products, but they can become flat quite fast, and the filling can take the shape of huge lumps after washing. They often need to be replaced after 1-2 years.

On the other hand, goose down-filled products are resistant against external effects, and thus can be used for 10-15 years without any significant repairing. Duvets can endure for even longer than this.

After this duration, if transformed and disinfected, a new product can emerge from the filling.

Overall, if we consider price value ratio, it is certain that a natural-filled bedding product is a better choice.

How can I choose the adequate size?

Let’s first measure the exact dimensions of the bedding covers we already own. In the case of new covers, this shall be done after the first wash, as every material shrinks a bit in the washing machine.

When ordering the duvet and pillow, let’s deduct 1 cm around the cover for reasons of comfort.

We make sure during the production process of the duvet, that the indicated sizes align with the sizes of the final product in its poise. This way, the duvet and the pillow can easily fit into the covers.
